Good afternoon, Chandler Friends:
Sunday I talked about Hannah’s story (1 Samuel 1:1-20). Everything ended up, “happily ever after” for Hannah. But we know it didn’t start that way. Hannah’s story began with hurt—pain—because she wanted to bear a child but could not. We can relate to Hannah. We have pain, too. And Hannah’s story teaches us what to do with that pain. Acknowledge it. Call it out. Tell others.
In his book, The Problem of Pain, C.S. Lewis says this: “Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also more hard to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden: it is easier to say “My tooth is aching” than to say “My heart is broken.”
Hannah’s story tells the truth: we all hurt. Whether you’re managing physical pain, wrestling with “mental pain” (as C.S. Lewis calls it), or dealing with life-long trauma, know that you’re not alone. Reach out if you’d like someone to talk to. Call my cellphone. Stop by the office. Know that I’m in your corner, and so are many others.
In the meantime, may we all come to know the love of God, who is with us even, “in the valley of the shadow of death” (Psalm 23:4).
