Welcome to the season of Advent! Advent comes from the Latin, “adventus” meaning “arrival” or “coming.” During the season of Advent, we are fortunate to hear from members of our own congregation about the ways Christ has arrived in their lives. After all, Advent is so much more than going through the rituals of remembering Christ’s coming in the past, some 2000 years ago in a barn. Advent is also a time for reflection upon Christ’s “arrival” in our lives. As Friends, we believe Christ is present to each of us no matter who we are, with or without any Christian ritual or statements of faith. Christ is here. We don’t have to wait any longer for Christ to arrive. Instead, He is waiting for us to welcome him.

Of course, we remember Christ’s historical arrival at Christmas through our traditions, like attending the children’s Christmas play (this Sunday!), singing Christmas Carols, and lifting our candles in the air together on Christmas Eve. We will do those things. And we should! But let’s not forget the point: we remember Christ’s coming into our world at Christmas, so that Christ might be born in us today.

As you listen to people (like Travis) share their Advent Testimonies this year, take some time to reflect upon your own life. Have you welcomed Christ into your life? Is Christ being “born” in you? Where do you see Christ at work in, through, or around you in the last calendar year? I believe Christ knocks at the door of our hearts (Revelation 3:20), and I can think of no better time to let him in than Christmas. This year, may we all open that door just a little wider.

Please keep reading to find out what’s coming up soon. One special note: We will once again have a float in the Christmas parade this Saturday, December 7th. If you or your kids would like to ride the float, come to Tilghman Park at 6:30. Bring candy if you want to throw it!

You may remember hearing about John Luc several months ago. John Luc is the son of Dr. Elise, the head surgeon at Kibimba Hospital. We’re asking you once again to keep John Luc, Dr. Elise, and their entire family in your prayers as they received news that John Luc’s brain tumor has returned. They will soon travel to Nairobi for emergency surgery, and then onward to France for more surgery and treatment. Pray for healing, strength, and wisdom for this family!

Bring your Christmas cards to the church office by December 11th. There are still extra cards at the office if you need them.

Every year Evangelical Friends Mission (EFM) puts out the Christmas Catalog. You can pick one up on your way into worship next Sunday at this lovely table put together by members of the Outreach Committee. A little bit of our USD goes a long way in the mission field. Please consider adding EFM to your Christmas generosity this year.
