Good afternoon, Chandler Friends:
Some of you will remember the Christian singer and songwriter Rich Mullins. Rich is one of my favorites. Although some might complain that his stuff doesn’t hold up musically, no one would dare argue against his mastery with the pen. In one of his most popular songs, “Sometimes by Step,” Rich writes, “Sometimes I think of Abraham, how one star he saw had been lit for me. He was a stranger in this land, and I am that no less than he.” I love those lines, especially as I think of Abraham, Sarah, and the drama that unfolds in the book of Genesis. In Genesis 15, the LORD takes Abraham outside and tells him to, “count the stars, if you can.” And then God tells Abraham, “that’s how many descendants you will have.” It moves me to think that one of those stars Abraham looked up and saw in the night sky was lit for… me.
As Christians, we are indeed, “strangers in this land.” We don’t quite fit in. Nor should we—at least not entirely. Take comfort in knowing your ultimate citizenship is in heaven. And be encouraged, because even though you don’t fit in here on earth, your identity goes much deeper than anything earth has to offer. “Just as Abraham, ‘believed God and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,’ so, you see, those who believe are the descendants of Abraham” (Galatians 3:6-7).
